Aerobic System Maintenance Dos and Don'ts

Dos for maintaining your aerobic system:

  • Regularly Inspect Your Septic System: Even though aerobic systems are highly effective, they still require periodic inspections, septic tank cleaning, and emptying. Gravity systems may need cleaning every three years, pressure distribution systems annually, and mound or sand filter systems as needed.
  • Pump Out Whenever Necessary: The frequency of septic tank pumping depends on factors like tank size and household water usage. Generally, residential septic systems require pumping every three to five years.
  • Be Water-wise: Control water usage within your home. Excessive water is a common factor in failed aerobic systems, leading to faster tank filling and more frequent pumping.
  • Use Licensed, Certified Companies: Ensure that your aerobic system is repaired or maintained by certified providers. Proper servicing involves more than just adding chlorine tablets.

Don'ts for maintaining your aerobic system:

  • Flush Solids Down the Drains: Avoid putting solids or grease down the toilets or drains. These can contribute to sludge buildup and disrupt the system's treatment process.
  • Pour Harsh Chemicals in Your Toilets: Chemicals destroy the necessary bacteria in your aerobic system and can corrode drainage pipes. Dispose of chemicals appropriately through local public health hazard waste programs.
  • Park Cars or Trucks on Your Drain field: Heavy machinery over septic tanks can compact the soil and lead to system failure. Also, avoid planting flower gardens over the tanks.
  • Add Septic Tank Additives: Some products aren't approved by health departments and may harm your system by adding extra solids.
Remember, proper maintenance ensures the longevity and effectiveness of your aerobic system!
